Our Top Tips for Recording your Life Story

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your lifestorybank recording sessions. Remember, you can re-record any time so it doesn't need to be perfect the first time around.

  1. Get COMFORTABLE! Any discomfort you feel will show. So find a comfy spot to reveal the true you.
  2. Make sure that your comfy spot has decent light and isn't noisy or echoes as this will affect the quality of the recording.
  3. Work out whether you feel better doing this with others around or on your own. Some people prefer company while others prefer to go solo.
  4. Photos and old family videos are great memory aids. So maybe dig out a few photos to bring back those good times.
  5. Music is also a great way to remember important and fun times in our lives. Why not play a little music to get into the mood?
  6. You have up to 5 minutes to answer each question but you don't have to use all this time. Studies* have shown that 2 minutes is the optimal viewing time. Short and sweet is far more engaging and when answers are kept to the point, it is easier for the viewer.
  7. While we have thought of a lot of questions to ask we realize that we might still miss something for you. Often you will find at the end of a chapter the option to record any other memories and stories that the interview has brought to mind.
  8. Don't feel you have to do all the chapters at once. Pace yourself and choose one or two at a time. Then it doesn't become too daunting.
  9. You might find it good to listen or read all the questions in a chapter before recording. This can help you mentally prepare your answers.
  10. Don't feel you have to answer all of the questions. Just skip the ones that aren't relevant or that you would rather think about first.
  11. Talk to friends and family. It can help if you have stalled on a question, is a great talking point and is also a great way to help colour those memories.
  12. Have a go! Once you have started it is easy to continue. Don't worry about looking perfect for the camera. Remember this is not a public site where anyone can see your recordings this is for YOU, your loved ones and your friends. Plus you can always re-record at a later date if you wish.
  13. Move the avatar so it is as close to your webcam or pc camera as possible and talk to it or your recorded image. You will get a better result as it makes it seem as though you are talking to the camera.
  14. Remember to check your microphone and camera are working.

Well done for getting here. By doing this you are leaving a superb legacy and doing something that will make a big difference to those who love you. Hope you re-live some great memories and remember some wonderful people, pets and places. Enjoy!
